In a world that increasingly becoming more organic in nature and desire, any technological breakthroughs that allow for less in chemical treatment are a good thing. This particular breakthrough is impressive in that it allows for enhancements in crop protection without relying on the good old standby - the pesticide.
Making a better seed is the key to the success of this project. While there are always going to be questions regarding the safety of any form of genetic or molecular manipulation, common sense points out that this technique will be far more safe than the alternative.
With the food crisis bearing down on many countries and peoples, it is good to know that there may be safe ways to make it all work out for the better. This article at We Heart World has drawn both criticism and acclaim, but most of all, it brought views.
“You might say that they cause the molecules to explode.”
One company that has led the way in discovering the solution to that very problem is Monsanto. The only problem is that their solutions have hurt more than they have helped — but have been very profitable for them.
We are consuming more now than ever, and thus the demand is enormous. Suppliers have a little secret that the average consumer does not know or ask about, and that is, how this increasing demand is being met.

What a great idea. There’s no telling what the effects of all these chemicals in our body..

Wow, electrons! Who would have thought?

So, basically want to radiate the food instead of pesticides?

Organic means one thing: ORGANIC!!!
Zapping foods with Electrons = Not Organic. sorry.

At least call this what it really is — irradiation. This is merely PR for Monsanto, don’t be fooled. It’s not organic or natural.

You fail at farming. Eat more granola, hippie.

You do realize that these “electrons” are simply gamma radiation, right?
Don’t believe me? Pick up a high-school physics book and check it out yourself. People don’t like the idea of gamma-irradiated meat, are they OK with gamma-irradiated seeds? Perhaps the meat people should have called this “electron bombardment” as well.
That being said, there is nothing scientifically wrong with eating seeds bombarded by gamm rays. HOWEVER, this treatment *would* have a significant impact for anyone seeking to save these seeds for future crops.
Gamma-irradiation is a tried-and-true method of generating mutations in seeds and anyone who tries to re-plant gamma-irradiated seeds is going to face higher rates of mutation. The researchers seem to be trying to control this through dosage, but any amount of exposure to radiation is going to raise the base level of mutation among the seed populations treated, at least at some level.

Passerby must have failed high school science (if he ever attended.) Electrons are not gamma radiation.
Electrons are Beta radiation. Beta emitters are generally quite harmless unless inhaled, as low energy electrons can’t penetrate a sheet of paper. That’s why the researchers have to tune their process. They’re setting the electron beam energy high enough to kill surface cells, yet not penetrate the seed.
There is no point in trying to “think” about science & technology with your gonads. You need to engage your brain and *learn* something. “Organic” and “Natural” don’t mean good for you. Both radioactivity and arsenic are “natural”, and both will kill you — or possibly save in small amounts.
BTW Passerby: Your old TV tube has been pointing Beta Radiation at you from the day you started watching cartoons. Pointed right at your head! Too bad the glass front of the tube stopped it all.

insightful post, thank you for sharing.
i’ve always wondered - if I had to choose, which is better, eating local or eating organic? http://carrieanddanielle.com/shopping-local-my-get-out-of-jail-free-tips/

Not that I’m totally impressed, but this is more than I expected for when I found a link on Digg telling that the info here is awesome. Thanks.
