Is the Food Crisis Forcing Unsafe Science to Come up with an Answer?

There are many moral issues and health questions that always pop up whenever terms like “genetic manipulation” and “radiation enhancement” are put into the same sentence as something that we eat.  Whether or not those concerns are valid is a question for science, but right now, the answer to the question (that many are going with, at least) is that it’s “harmless” to humans.

While many may find that hard to believe, it is being used right now, especially in areas where the food crisis has taken the greatest toll.  Are we, as a society, ready to increase our intervention with nature in a way that will effect what we put in our mouths?  Is nourishment now more important than side-effects later?  This article from We Heart World talks about these and other issues as it appears science is coming up with answers that may or may not be dangerous to us.

With climate change, population growth, and alternative energy needs all contributing increased challenges for growing food to feed the world, some scientists are looking towards nuclear technologies to unmask hidden potential in plants.  The goal is to allow plant breeders to develop new varieties of crops to withstand environmental stresses.

The result may be that we end up with crops that can grow in more extreme conditions… and possibly more extreme ways.  As advances are made to various technologies, one may start questioning what has been done to the asparagus to make it grow in the mountains.
