The not-so-fine line between fighting political correctness and being stupid

For those who aren’t aware, we detest political correctness when it interferes with common sense. The only thing worse than political correctness when it comes to indoctrination is hatred-fueled rants that go too far. They can be even worse.

Such is the case of Liberty University President Jerry Falwell Jr who took fighting political correctness too far with a single comment.

“I’ve always thought if more good people had concealed carry permits, then we could end those Muslims before they walked in…” Falwell said.

There’s a difference between wanting to fight radical Islamic terrorists as many of us want to do and ending “those Muslims” as Falwell indicated. Chances are he was talking about the two Muslim terrorists themselves when he said “those Muslims” but context and accuracy is important. Had someone said we need to “end those pro-lifers” after the Planned Parenthood attacks or we need to “end those cops” after any of the police shootings, there would also be outrage.

It’s easy for us to wave the banner of fighting political correctness whenever anyone takes offense to words, but that doesn’t mean that it’s right to stereotype of classify a particular race, creed, sex, or religion within a speech to 10,000 college students.

The sad part is that the original message was a righteous one, but the focus will be on his slip of the tongue. This damages the cause of protecting 2nd Amendment rights.
