Super PAC chief supporting Rand Paul indicted for 2012 finance violations

Politics can be an ugly game when it comes to finances during elections. The system is clearly broken but the people who can change it benefit by not changing it. The whole system is very broken. This was made more clear today as the head of a Rand Paul super PAC was indicted for 2012 campaign finance violations.

Jesse Benton, who has worked with Ron Paul and Mitch McConnell before helping the younger Paul’s 2016 Presidential bid, has been indicted over allegations that he administered a pay-for-support plan by not disclosing moneys that we given to then-Iowa state senator Kent Sorenson.

According to the Washington Post:

“Federal campaign finance laws are intended to ensure the integrity and transparency of the federal election process,” said Assistant Attorney General Leslie R. Caldwell in a statement announcing the indictment. “When political operatives make under-the-table payments to buy an elected official’s political support, it undermines public confidence in our entire political system.”
