The Numbers Don’t Lie

Over the past couple of years, we’ve discovered that SMS and Mobile are dominating the digital marketing world. If you are aren’t taking advantage of this or are unsure of it then there is no better time than now to hop onto the mobile marketing bandwagon.

The team over at SMSGlobal has put together this stunning infographic explaining why SMS for business is the way of the future and how you’re business can crush your competition when you wield this powerful tool.

Let’s take a look.

It All Starts with the Attention Economy

For those of us who are unfamiliar with this term, it acknowledges that while we’re living in the age of free information, we’re creating a rapidly increasing poverty of attention.

What exactly does this mean for digital marketers? Well, not only are they having to use their advertising budget to fight for your hard-earned dollar, but for your attention as well.

And what better way to grab your attention than with the tool we just can’t seem to part with, no matter where we are or what we’re doing?

Roughly 3 billion people in the world use smartphones. That’s almost half of the entire world’s population.

To put that into a little perspective, more than 90% of the phones owned in the United States are considered smartphones.

While having them is one thing, using them is another.

Smartphone use has also been growing worldwide. Consumers in the US and UK spend 77% of their time browsing the internet from their smartphones. Because of this immense amount of time on the internet, mobile commerce grew $8 billion between the years 2018 and 2019.

SMS as an Impactful Marketing Channel

It’s reported that the average American smartphone user will check their phone at least 96 times daily and 82% will open every single message they receive. For businesses all around the world, this is a lucrative channel just waiting to be tapped.

With most marketing techniques there is quite a bit of resistance from consumers who do not want to be bothered by ads in their daily life but more than 64% of consumers think that businesses should use more SMS based engagements. Give the people what they want!

Trust is the key to it all. If a consumer trusts a company they are more likely to give them their phone number.

In 2019 roughly 41% of consumers trusted their personal information, including their phone number to online retailers.

78% of people age 55 or older communicated this way while 77% of people ages 39-54 and 81% younger generations aged 20-38.

Mobile Commerce and Consumer Behavior

Mobile commerce is growing at an astounding rate. By 2021 eCommerce is predicted to reach $3.5 trillion in sales increasing from $2.9 trillion in 2020 and mobile commerce is expected to make up 72.9% of that.

While its growth is incredible, over 56% of all in-store sales are driven by digital interactions from smart devices like phones and tablets.

Currently, the majority of coupons are redeemed through mobile devices and are expected to reach 80% of all coupon redemption by 2022.

Mobile is Growing, E-mail is Shrinking

Think about all the e-mails you receive throughout the day.

Whether they are from spam, work, or just notifications, the average person receives hundreds of e-mails per day.

That’s a lot of noise that blocks out the things you actually want to see, which is the reason more and more marketers are using SMS and Mobile marketing.

In the last 2 years, mobile messaging has grown by 31% while e-mail has only grown by 11%.

The Future: SMS and Mobile Trends

Plain and simple the future of digital advertising is in mobile and SMS.

For the first time ever, mobile ad revenue is expected to overtake TV in 2020.

On top of that, 85% of executives believe that SMS and real-time mobile marketing will be the next big thing that could give brands a competitive advantage and it is projected to grow at an astounding rate of 20.3% per year over the next 5 years.

With all these statistics backing it, it’s time to seize this advantage by adding SMS and mobile strategies to your marketing tech stack.
